We’ve trekked through free agency. We watched collegiate players have their lives forever changed through the NFL draft. We’ve even begun to see young players take their first steps in the league during rookie minicamps and OTAs. All of this has led to where we are now. In less than 100 days, we will be watching NFL football once again.
For the Philadelphia Eagles, there is much optimism surrounding the organization. The 2022-23 season ended on a bitter note with a late collapse in the championship game, but the Super Bowl runner ups are back with perhaps an even better roster than the year prior. Sure, there has been some turnover within the coaching staff and some young players are being asked to step up into much larger roles, but one thing is still certain: the Eagles are among the league’s best teams heading into the 2023 campaign.
Today, we look closer at that campaign with the Philadelphia Eagles game by game predictions for the 2023-24 schedule. As the team won the NFC East last season, they play a true first-place schedule this year, facing the likes of Kansas City, Buffalo, San Francisco, and the typical but resurgent NFC East teams. It will not be easy, but if any team has a chance to win back-to-back NFC East titles for the first time since 2004, it’s this Eagles’ squad. Without further ado, let’s look at these Philadelphia Eagles game by game predictions.
Philadelphia Eagles Game by Game Predictions
Week 1: at New England Patriots
To start off their quest to reconquer the NFC, the Eagles travel to Foxborough in a contest honoring one of the legends of the game, Tom Brady. Unfortunately for Patriots fans, Brady isn’t the quarterback in this game–Mac Jones is.
The third-year quarterback out of Alabama has had a rocky start to his career, struggling to elevate an offense devoid of much surrounding talent. The 2023 roster looks a little better on paper than it has in years past, but still, given the amount of world-beaters on the Eagles’ defensive front, it will be a tough ask for Jones to lead his team to a victory here. The Eagles offense could potentially face some early season sluggishness, especially against the greatest defensive head coach ever in Bill Belichick and with a new offensive coordinator themselves, but this one just seems like a standard week one mismatch. Chalk Philadelphia down with a 1-0 start.
Week 2: vs Minnesota Vikings
In the exact same scenario as we saw in 2022, the Vikings travel to Philadelphia for a week two primetime matchup with the Eagles. Last time around, things did not end well for Minnesota as the Eagles steamrolled them 24-7. This time, don’t expect it to be much different.
The Vikings offense is clearly a strength, especially with recently drafted Jordan Addison now in the fold at wide receiver. However, whether or not Dalvin Cook will be on the roster week one is still unknown, although nothing is official as of yet. If Cook isn’t in the fold during this week two contest, expect the Eagles pass rush to have a field day against a one-dimensional offense. It’s also important to remember how well the Eagles’ secondary handled Minnesota last season. I don’t foresee this being another 24-7 type of game, but an Eagles win does feel like the most likely outcome. Give me a 2-0 record.
Week 3: at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Another team still reeling after the departure of Tom Brady, the Buccaneers enter the season with former number one overall pick Baker Mayfield slotted as the starting quarterback. Although I am a bigger defender of Mayfield than most, it’s undeniable that he’s completely outmatched in this game.
On paper, this Tampa Bay roster is actually pretty good with plenty of playmakers on both sides of the ball. The defense took a clear step backwards in 2022, but assuming they can make the bounce back that their talent suggests is possible, this could be a competitive squad going into the season. However, where they lack is at the two most important spots on any NFL roster: quarterback and head coach.
Mayfield, after a fast start during his rookie year in Cleveland, hasn’t played to his early hype very often. His short stint in Los Angeles showed some potential, but he hasn’t been able to replant himself as a full-time starter in an NFL offense. As for head coach Todd Bowles, head coaching is quickly appearing to be too big of a role for him. His time as the head of the New York Jets was lackluster, and after one season as the Bucs’ coach, he doesn’t seem fit for the job. Tampa Bay’s defense took a major step back in 2022, and as a defensive minded head coach, Bowles shoulders much of the blame for that.
Same as it was for the week one game, the Eagles simply overmatch their opponent here and should have no problem moving to 3-0.
Week 4: vs Washington Commanders
Under the new leadership of Sam Howell, the Commanders have an uphill climb if they want to make any noise in a strong NFC East. This early in the season, the sophomore quarterback is likely to still be experiencing some growing pains as he adjusts to NFL caliber football. Against the Eagles defensive front, this is a bad recipe for Washington.
Perhaps you remember what happened in the Eagles and Commanders week three meeting in 2022. Carson Wentz was beaten to a pulp behind a developing offensive line, and this season, it can be expected for this to happen again. Howell may or may not turn into a starting caliber NFL quarterback, but this early in the season, he has a real challenge on his hands. Mark it down as another win for the now 4-0 Eagles.
Week 5: at Los Angeles Rams
No team in NFL history has experienced a Super Bowl slump quite like the Rams did in 2022. Once the best team in football, the Rams were a shell of themselves last season, and heading into 2023, they’re still in a bit of a rebuilding phase. Will Matthew Stafford regain his previous form? Can the defense, nearly completely devoid of talent, keep teams out of the endzone? Can the offensive line block… anyone? All of this is yet to be seen, but it combines into a potentially unsolvable formula, especially against the star-studded Eagles.
Perhaps Philadelphia struggles to stop Cooper Kupp, who knows. All that’s for certain is, like most of the other games to this point, the Eagles are far and away the better team in this game. Not much need for discussion, the Eagles now move to 5-0 on the year.
Week 6: at New York Jets
With the acquisition of Aaron Rodgers, the Jets are a truly different team than they have been for most of the 21st century. Surrounded by a flurry of young talent, the Packers’ legend leads what will likely be a playoff team into a matchup against, in this exercise, the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles.
All time, the Eagles are 12-0 against the New York Jets. Despite all the new pieces playing in MetLife Stadium, that isn’t changing here. The Eagles are just too deep of a roster for this up-and-coming Jets team, being able to score on a whim and put constant pressure on the veteran quarterback. It will probably be close, but I’ve still got this as another win for the now 6-0 Eagles.
Week 7: vs Miami Dolphins
To this point in the season, the Eagles won’t have played a team with as much talent as Miami has. Whether it’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle on offense or Xavien Howard and Jalen Ramsey on defense, the Dolphins are truly elite on the outside. However, if there’s one team capable of matching this talent, it’s the Eagles.
The one question mark for the Dolphins has to be at quarterback. Reports have recently stated that Tua Tagovailoa is fully healthy going into training camp, but given his injury history last year alone, who knows if he remains available. However, even if he does stay healthy, he is in the same category as Mac Jones–he has shown flashes but hasn’t proven an ability to elevate the team around him. As has become the pattern, the Eagles pass rush will likely overwhelm the Alabama product, giving Philadelphia another win in a now 7-0 season.
Week 8: at Washington Commanders
I can’t lie, this game worries me. Everyone should remember Philly’s week 10 debacle in 2022 where they lost their first game of the year to a lesser Washington team. That game (otherwise known as Washington’s Super Bowl) proved just how dangerous division teams can be, especially when the superior team goes in overconfident.
However, despite my concerns, the mismatch is too big for me to not predict the season sweep. The Eagles should be able to suffocate Howell, and as long as the offense can protect the football, this game shouldn’t be particularly close. Maybe it’s a homer pick, but I’m taking the Eagles to move to 8-0.
Week 9: vs Dallas Cowboys
Ah yes, one of the most heated rivalries in sports. The Eagles and Cowboys are clearly the favorites to win the division in 2023, and this matchup will go a long way in deciding that. This is not a prediction of the Cowboys’ record so I can’t say how they’ll be doing by this point in the season, but all that matters is that records are irrelevant going into this game.
I’ll spoil this part now–this series is going to be split. Rarely do Philadelphia or Dallas sweep the other in the regular season, and despite the immense talent in Philly, these games are going to be very competitive. However, I have the Eagles winning the home stand here in week nine and moving to 9-0.
Week 10: BYE WEEK
Maybe you think 9-0 at the bye week is a stretch. That’s okay, I don’t fully buy it either. It’s tough predicting which game turns into a loss when a team is clearly better than everyone on their schedule. However, Philadelphia’s bye week in 2023 signals a very big shift in their schedule. Let’s dig into it, shall we?
Week 11: at Kansas City Chiefs
The NFL schedule makers knew what they were doing with this one. The Eagles travel to Kansas City in week 11 for a rematch of Super Bowl 57 with both teams heading into the game off of a bye week. There won’t be any fluke wins coming out of this one. Both teams will be healthy (or as healthy as you can be midseason) and prepared going into one of the most highly anticipated games of the season.
Yes, I am still bitter about the Super Bowl, but that doesn’t have anything to do with this take–I believe the Eagles are a better team than the Chiefs. Sure, they have Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, but the Eagles are better on pretty much every other front. However, I don’t think the roster battle will decide this game. No one is better off of a bye week than Andy Reid, and here, I think it will be the difference.
Nick Sirianni has coached the Eagles better than anyone could have expected when he got the job, but against Reid, he is simply outmatched. Maybe Sean Desai doesn’t make a fool of himself like Jonathan Gannon did as defensive coordinator during the Super Bowl–either way, the coaching battle will likely go to the defending champs in this one. It will be a close battle, but I have the Eagles falling to 9-1 here.
Week 12: vs Buffalo Bills
After one of the biggest games of the season, the Eagles get to go back home to face… another Super Bowl contender. Oh well, at least there won’t be any “weak schedule” complaints this year. The Bills are probably the second-best squad the Eagles will face in 2023, with Josh Allen at the helm surrounded by all sorts of playmakers and a strong defense. These two games back-to-back will test what the Eagles are truly made of, especially if they want to make another run at the Super Bowl.
I believe Philadelphia wins at least one of these two tough games. In this exercise, I had the Chiefs getting the win, so of course that means I am predicting the Bills to fall in Philly. While Josh Allen is a threat, I expect second-year linebacker Nakobe Dean to be fully acclimated to the defense by this point, giving the Eagles a do-it-all backer who can keep Allen in check. On the opposite side of the ball, I think Jalen Hurts and co. can move the ball on a defense who lost some pieces this offseason.
In a tough game, the Eagles grab a big win here and move to 10-1.
Week 13: vs San Francisco 49ers
When you think of modern day out-of-division rivalries, your mind probably goes to the AFC. Chiefs vs Bengals, Chiefs vs Bills, Chargers vs the wildcard round–there are plenty of great teams and newfound rivalries in the NFL’s younger conference. Meanwhile, the NFC doesn’t share that same competitiveness, or at least it didn’t until the 2022-23 playoffs. There, a new rivalry was born out of a completely lopsided contest, and now, we get a sequel here in week 13.
The 49ers are a very good team, and under head coach Kyle Shanahan have been consistently competitive. If there is a team to beat Philadelphia in the NFC, it’s San Francisco. However, if it does happen, I think they’ll have to wait until the playoffs, because they’re not winning in this simulation.
My two main concerns with the 49ers are at quarterback and offensive line. Brock Purdy came out of complete irrelevance (literally) in 2022 and took control of the 49ers’ starting quarterback job. He played smart, albeit safe football and didn’t cost San Francisco any games. However, he never really showed anything particularly special, just that he could manage games very effectively. In 2023, with more film available to opposing defenses, he’ll need to prove a bit more.
Meanwhile on the offensive line, we all saw how Purdy’s 2022-23 season ended. The rookie QB was pummeled in the NFC Championship, eventually forced to exit with an elbow injury. If the o-line continues to struggle against the Eagles’ defensive front, Purdy is in big trouble.
I foresee this game going similarly to how the NFC Championship did–Purdy will get hit early and often. The Eagles will walk away from this game with an 11-1 record, putting them firmly in the NFC’s driver seat.
Week 14: at Dallas Cowboys
As I foreshadowed, the Cowboys are winning their second bout with Philadelphia. The Eagles have historically struggled at AT&T Stadium, and even in the dominant season I’ve predicted here, that won’t change. Again, it will likely be a close game, whether it be by Dak Prescott and Hurts putting on a show or by the defenses playing at their bests. Either way, the Cowboys narrowly edge out the Eagles here with the birds record falling to 11-2.
Week 15: at Seattle Seahawks
Back-to-back road games is never a fun stretch for a football team, especially when both are on the opposite side of the country. This can be made worse when these games end a brutal stretch of contests. Well, that’s the Eagles scenario here as they travel to Washington state to take on the Geno Smith-Seahawks.
The Seahawks came out of nowhere last season to make the playoffs, giving San Francisco all they could handle in the first round. While not as deep as the other elite teams in the league, they have found a winning formula behind Smith and a great group of 2022 rookies. The defense was the big concern last season, and although it’s still not amazing, it is improved from 2022. This has Seattle in a great position to make another playoff run.
The Eagles are the better team here pretty easily, but given the scenario heading into the game and the fact that Philly always has a couple weak performances throughout the season, I’m going to give this one to the Seahawks. With that, Philadelphia falls to 11-3 on the season.
Week 16: vs New York Giants
It’s pretty unfortunate that this cross-town rivalry was put on the backburner by the NFL schedule makers, especially with how improved the Giants are under head coach Brian Daboll. No matter the disparity between the two teams, Eagles-Giants always provides fun, competitive games, and this late in the season with playoff implications in the forefront, this should be no different.
I do think the Eagles take this one as they are still the much better team compared to New York. Say what you will about quarterback Daniel Jones, but without much help on the outside, it’s still an uphill battle if the Giants want to top Philadelphia. The Eagles win again moving their record to 12-3.
Week 17: vs Arizona Cardinals
After seven straight games against 2022 playoff teams, it’s only right that the Eagles get an easy one to wind down the season. The Cardinals, who will be without starting quarterback Kyler Murray for the season, are fully in the midst of a rebuild. Without a quarterback, they are likely going to be in the mix for the number one pick in next year’s draft. There aren’t many games they should be favored to win, and this one is no different.
The Eagles win this one pretty easily, handedly beating their former defensive coordinator in Gannon. The Eagles record now moves to 13-3 with just one game remaining.
Week 18: at New York Giants
This may be a cop out answer, but with a playoff spot already locked up, the Eagles will start Marcus Mariota and many of the backups in this game. Maybe this game means something to the Giants’ playoff chances, but in this exercise, the Eagles already have the NFC locked up and look to get healthy heading into the playoffs. To end the Philadelphia Eagles game by game predictions, let’s give the Eagles a loss to the division rival Giants, putting their final regular season record at 13-4.
