The 2023 season has been a roller coaster for the Green Bay Packers. There has been some good but the growing pains are definitely there. There has been one bright spot and that is the front four of the defense.
The Green Bay Packers Front Four
The front four that the Packers want on the field consist of Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, Preston Smith, and Rashan Gary. When these four players are rushing the passer, opposing quarterbacks are not getting a lot of time in the pocket. According to PFF’s Arjun Menon, this line is generating a ton of pressure.
They are getting pressure on 52.63 percent of snaps and a sack on 31.58 percent. The sack rate is the best in the league which is crazy considering how many good lines there are in the league. The best teams are able to rush four and still get to the quarterback. Green Bay has built a line that can do this but there is one caveat to the stat.
Limited Snaps
Because of Gary’s recovery from the ACL injury last season, he has been limited. This means that the front four of the Green Bay Packers have only been on the field at the same time for 19 snaps. While 10 pressures and six sacks on 19 snaps are really good, it is a limited sample size. However, it does say something that this group is able to get pressure that easily.
As Gary becomes more of a full-time player, the idea is that while the percentage may go down simply because of more snaps, this group will still be able to generate pressure. Gary, Smith, and Clark are more known commodities in the league. They have been around for a while and seeing them succeed is not necessarily a surprise. The Green Bay Packers have to love the development they are seeing out of Devonte Wyatt.
Devonte Wyatt’s Second-Year Leap
Wyatt had a quiet rookie season mostly due to limited snaps. The Packers had some veterans on one-year deals that were brought in for the final attempt at a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers. Now that those players have left, Wyatt is getting an increased role and he is taking advantage of the opportunity.
His strength and athleticism have been on display. Part of the reason for more pressure has been the team using more stunts on obvious passing downs. Wyatt’s ability to move nimbly around the line has caused a lot of disruption and sack opportunities. If he continues to develop, the Packers will have a dominant interior lineman going forward.
The Green Bay Packers front four have a huge opportunity coming out of the bye week. The team heads to Denver to take on the Broncos who have a struggling offense. Russell Wilson is known for holding the ball too long and taking a lot of sacks, especially this season. If this unit can generate a lot of pressure, they should feast on Sunday.
