San Francisco 49ers Draft
Round 2 Pick 54: Wanya Morris – OT – Oklahoma
TRADE: 49ers receive pick 54, Chargers receiver picks 99, 155, and a 2024 second-round pick.
The 2023 San Francisco 49ers draft picks do not begin until round three with pick 99. With that, it felt important to trade up and get a solid offensive tackle. When looking at how many teams were still ahead of them, Morris was not going to fall to 99. Morris is a highly athletic tackle, and even if he does not start right away, the 49ers could use him.
This San Francisco 49ers draft pick played most of his snaps at right tackle, which is perfect for the Niners. According to Pro Football Focus, Morris only allowed two sacks in 2022, with an overall grade of 76.6. Morris can be just the San Francisco 49ers draft pick the team was looking for.
Round 3 Pick 101: KJ Henry – ED – Clemson
With no more trades, the next San Francisco 49ers draft pick is in round three with pick 101. With this pick, the 49ers select KJ Henry, the edge rusher from Clemson. Originally the plan with this pick was to take Zach Harrison from Ohio State, but he was taken by the Washington Commanders.
While this may not be the original pick for the team, this San Francisco 49ers draft pick is still a solid grab. Henry spent five years with Clemson, playing 14 games in 2022. This past season, Henry had 51 combined tackles, 26 of which were solo, nine tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks, according to Sports Reference. He also had six pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. He may not be a first-round pick, but Henery can do very well with the current San Francisco defensive line.
Round 3 Pick 102: Ji’Ayir Brown – S – Penn State
There was a toss-up between going tight end or defensive back. Once Zach Kuntz was taken off the board, the San Francisco 49ers draft pick went to Ji’Ayir Brown, a safety from Penn State. In 2022, Brown had three pass deflections and four interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, according to Sports Reference. Brown also had a fumble recovery for a touchdown in 2022.
This San Francisco 49ers draft pick is a solid and athletic player whose draft stock continues to rise. The team has the last pick in the third round but has done well in the past with later draft picks.
