The Seattle Seahawks have used the off-season to bring in some fantastic additional offseason additions to bolster holes in the depth chart. There are plenty of those due to injuries and the Hawks cutting many players in the offseason. If I had to pick the one signed free agent that will be the most impactful this season, it would be Dre’Mont Jones.

Where Did Dre’Mont Come From?

Dre’Mont Jones has been a Denver Bronco for the past four seasons. In the last three, he has 18.5 sacks, 25 tackles for loss, and has hit 32 quarterbacks. Where did Dre’Mont Jones actually come from? Heaven. The Seahawks love bringing a Denver Bronco over, and this is a continuation of a pattern (Drew Lock and Shelby Harris, for example). Shelby Harris got cut, and Drew Lock should have been cut, so hopefully this trade is a better fit. Seattle wanted him last year, and now they finally get him for quite a bit more money than they were likely hoping.

How Did Seattle Get Jones on Their Team?

It’s either a Christmas miracle or a bribe (just kidding!). The Seahawks lured Dre’Mont Jones in with an impressive contract. Dre’Mont’s three-year contract is for $51 million. However, we don’t have all the details on incentives, guarantees, and the like. Either way, Schneider and Carroll have never dished out more than $10 million a year for a free agent from another team. Money talks, and this shows a level of confidence and faith that the GM and head coach have never had for anyone else. That alone speaks volumes about why Jones is the biggest offseason addition.

Why is Dre’Mont Jones the Biggest Offseason Addition?

Dre’Mont Jones is the biggest off-season addition, hands down, because he’s young and really, really good—mostly the latter. Jones also has the underdog complex that most of the greatest players have – think Drew Brees and Tom Brady. That chip on his shoulder will keep him alert, on his toes, and always improving.

Our front seven was abysmal last year (and it’s not a new problem), so it was crucial that between the draft and free-agent signings, we sort that problematic situation out. The Seahawks have made other signings to address the weaknesses on the defensive side of the ball, and Dre’Mont Jones is one of the most talented and exciting players to join the pack.

The defense will have many, many new faces between rookies, signings, and injuries, keeping some of our best off the gridiron for the beginning of the season. Dishing out big money for a top 50 free agent based on ESPN ratings only made sense. Jones has experience playing many front-seven positions, offering versatility and coverage. He will also bring some much-needed run support to Seattle.

Teams were fighting hand and fist, offering him everything, but as much as the Hawks chose him, he chose us as well. Seattle made sense to Dre’Mont, as he feels he would be a good fit from a schematic standpoint. I couldn’t agree more. He’s excited to get to explore the city and begin his career in the Emerald City. He’s excited to get to explore the city and begin his career in the Emerald City. Welcome, Dre’Mont Jones! We can’t wait to have you in the PNW either!

Other Talented Offseason Additions

Bobby Wagner is a Seattle Seahawk through and through, and this signing feels like a formality. The Hawks messed up big time by trading him away the first time in such a rude manner, but hopefully, he can overlook that and bring us that same LOB linebacker energy. He’s a much-needed addition but not necessarily the biggest offseason addition.

The same would go for Geno Smith – the difference between Smith and Jones is that we know how Jones plays and are confident; this is only Smith’s second season starting as quarterback for us, and this could be a mixed bag of growing pains and overinflated expectations. Ideally, Geno Smith will be the biggest offseason addition (although it’s just a re-signing), but I’m not 100% on that. I think most Seahawks fans are not.

I also plan on seeing great things from safety Julian Love, defensive tackle Jarran Reed, and guard Phil Haynes. Let’s go Hawks!
