New Orleans continues to be busy in the offseason as we head into the month of April. The Saints have been able to use the free-agent period to fill in some of the holes that were prevalent during the 2022 season and they hope it leads to them making the playoffs after a two-year absence. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, former Chiefs and Falcons wide receiver Bryan Edwards is signing with the Saints. Edwards will now join forces with his former quarterback, Derek Carr, in New Orleans as the duo will link up with the black and gold.

Bryan Edwards’s Time in the NFL:
Edwards was selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders coming out of South Carolina. He was able to become one of Carr’s favorite targets during his time with the Raiders, as he connected on 34 receptions for 571 yards and three touchdowns. Throughout his career in the NFL, Edwards has shown his ability to win on contested catches and stretch out opposing defense vertically.
His time with the Raiders wouldn’t last long, as he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons heading into the offseason after the 2021 season wrapped up. The former third-round draft pick would see action in seven games throughout the 2022 season, but he would only haul in three passes for 15 yards before getting cut in November. Edwards wouldn’t be able to compete for a starting position as injuries would limit his production throughout the offseason and he would later be released by the Falcons.
The South Carolina product would be picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs, where he would spend the rest of his 2022 season on the Chiefs practice squad.
Edwards Provides Depth To the Saints Wideout Room:
It has been a rollercoaster offseason for the Saints’ wide receiver room as New Orleans was able to retain Michael Thomas, but they ended up losing two key players to the free agency period. Marquez Callaway joined forces with former Saints head coach Sean Payton in Denver and Deonte Harty signed with the Buffalo Bills. Another notable wide receiver to look out for the rest of the way is whether or not New Orleans will re-sign Jarvis Landry.
Even if Landry doesn’t return to the Saints, New Orleans was able to add two key pieces last offseason through the 2022 NFL Draft. The Saints saw the production of Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave. Olave quickly became the Saints WR1 after Thomas went down with an injury that would sideline him for the rest of the 2022 season.
Injuries have been a concern for Thomas as he hasn’t been able to stay on the field and play through the full 17-game stretch that New Orleans goes through every season. With the signing of Edwards to the Saints, it will not only reunite the former third-round draft pick with his former teammate, but it will also provide depth to the roster. What Edwards can bring to the Saints’ wide receiver core is that he catches the ball outside of his frame, and he is able to produce on underneath routes.
The Saints had concerns about the wide receiver position heading into the 2022 season, but now it is starting to become a position of strength for New Orleans. Even with the signing, the Saints can still look for a wide receiver to add to the roster through the 2023 NFL Draft and the class is once again loaded with talent.
