The Baltimore Ravens have released former two-time Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon III.
Gordon, 30, recently bounced around the AFC West with the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs practice squad where, with the ladder, he earned a Super Bowl ring.
Ravens Release Melvin Gordon III
Gordon ran for only 53 yards on 17 carries on the team’s three preseason games this summer, which didn’t help his chances of making the Ravens final 53-man roster.
The running backs who made the Raven’s 53-man roster are J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards, Justice Hill, and Keaton Mitchell.
Gordon will be able to find a new home in the NFL if a team needs a reliable veteran running back to help improve their seasons for a chance at the playoffs or to salvage a few wins to finish the 2023 season on a positive note.
The running back position is also being phased out for more pass-happy offenses throughout the league, but that’s a story for another day.
Gordon rushed for over 900 yards four times in his career, and one of those times, he rushed for 1,105 yards during the Chargers’ inaugural season in Los Angeles.
Gordon also helped the Chargers make the playoffs once by playing in two games where he rushed for 55 yards on 26 carries and scored two touchdowns that postseason.
Gordon definitely has fuel in the tank to be a reliable veteran running back. He may not be the main running back he was when he started his NFL career with the Los Angeles Chargers (then the San Diego Chargers) back in 2015. But it would be a mistake to count him out.
