LSU continues to add to its roster that it will be competing for another SEC West division title in 2023. On Tuesday, Notre Dame Logan Diggs announced that he is transferring to LSU to continue his playing career in Baton Rouge. The Boutte, Louisiana, will now return home to the state and be in the mix to have a key role in a loaded backfield heading into the new season. Diggs spent his first two seasons of his collegiate career at Notre Dame prior to announcing his transfer destination to the Tigers. The week continues to be a success as LSU added Ju’Juan Johnson to their class of 2024 and now landing Diggs on the next day.
The decision comes after Diggs took an official visit to LSU’s campus this past weekend. Diggs entered his name into the transfer portal in late April and received interest from multiple schools around the country. Other schools that continue to lock up visits were LSU, USC, South Carolina, Colorado, and others. Brian Kelly continues to emphasis locking down the state of Louisiana when it comes to the recruiting trail and the transfer portal. Diggs did play with current LSU head coach Brian Kelly for one season.
Logan Diggs is Coming Home:
The junior running back started out his freshman season in 2021 as he went on to play in the last eight games for the Irish during his rookie season. During the 2021 season, Diggs had 22 carries for 230 yards and three touchdowns. Diggs would also add six receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown. He would continue to elevate his playing status heading into the 2022 season as he played in 12 of Notre Dame’s 13 games during the 2022 season.
Diggs finished the season with 821 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He would make one of Notre Dame’s top plays during the season against Boston College, where he would run it in for a 51-yard touchdown. Diggs added ten receptions for 211 yards on the season, and he finished with a pair of receiving touchdowns. The Boutte, Louisiana native showed his playmaking ability through the air as he hauled in a 75-yard touchdown pass against South Carolina in the Gator Bowl.
His 2022 season would be his best so far during his college career, as he had a team-high 165 carries. Diggs has shown through his first two seasons at Notre Dame that he can be effective in both the running and passing game. He has an impressive overall size and is natural with the ball in his hands. He will be looking to make an immediate impact this season when the Tigers take the field against Florida State under the lights.
Diggs Set to Join a Talented Backfield:
Diggs will join a backfield that has seven scholarship players on its roster heading into the 2023 season. The position does look crowded for Diggs coming to LSU, but there are question marks surrounding John Emery‘s availability this season. The Tigers also have two of their key running backs, Josh Williams and Armoni Goodwin, that have been dealing with injuries from last season. Kelly did speak on the availability of both Williams and Goodwin heading into next season:
“Armoni is probably the one that has a question mark in terms of where he’s going to be,” Kelly said. “That gave us some pause. I think Josh will be ready. At what level he’ll be is a question mark.”
With those three running backs in question mark heading into the 2023 season, there is one certainty that has remained during the offseason. Noah Cain impressed many last season and continued to showcase his skills during spring practices. Cain could very well be the Tigers’ lead back heading into this season with the uncertainty of the other running backs on the roster. With all of the question marks in the room, Kelly made it a priority to bring in Diggs to showcase his durability. The addition of Diggs will only elevate the expectations for the running back committee heading into the 12-game regular-season stretch in 2023.
