Four-Star defensive lineman, Liam Andrews, has announced his commitment to play for the Penn State Nittany Lions. Thomas is one of the many four-star players that the Nittany Lions have acquired for the class of 2024, and this recruitment was a big one. Before Andrews, the Nittany Lions received a commitment from Mylachi Williams. The defensive lineman chose Penn State over other Power-5 schools, another great sign for the university’s recruiting process. Here is a look at who Thomas is and what he will contribute to the Penn State Nittany Lions.
Liam Andrews High School Career So Far
The new defensive lineman, Liam Andrews, is from Brookline, Massachusettes, where he attends Dexter School. Andrews is a 6-5 lineman who weighs 260 pounds. This is a good sign for the player heading into his senior year of high school as a four-star recruit, according to 247Sports. The most interesting part about Penn State’s newest player is that he began the recruiting process as an offensive lineman. During his Junior year is when he began playing more on the defensive line. This makes Andrews a versatile lineman.
Brian Dohn of 247Sports describes Andrews as explosive, especially for his age. He can move quickly, assisting in him knocking offensive linemen off of him. When on the offensive line, he played left tackle, but as known, he is on the defensive line now. Andrews will most likely use his senior season of high school to adjust more to the defensive line before he is an official member of the Penn State Nittany Lions. He is now the second highest-rated commitment behind Quinton Martin.
Liam Andrews’ Potential with Penn State
Andrews received 22 offers before committing to Penn State on July 21st. Some of the schools that gave an offer to him were Florida, South Carlina, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio State. Of the offers, he made an official visit to Wisconsin, South Carolina, and of course, Penn State. The Nittany Lions have been putting together a decent amount of players when it comes to the class of 2024. The one position they have been missing out on when it comes to four-star players is the defensive line, but Andrews makes up for that.
When looking at the class of 2024 recruits, Mylachi Williams, De’Andre Cook, and Xavier Gilliam are all three-star defensive linemen. This is great, but Andrews is the first player to be a four-star player. By the time the season starts, it no longer matters what the players’ ratings are. It is up to them to fight for a spot as the starter, but for now, it is easier to judge based on ratings.
With the college football expansions beginning in 2024, Penn State is a known team to watch for. The Nittany Lions are heavily expected to make playoffs and make a push once inside. The school is already preparing renovations to Beaver Stadium because they are expecting to host playoff games. Landing these four-star recruits is a great sign for the program.
One thing to watch for is the position Andrews will play. He played Left Tackle, but it was not until recruitment that he stated he intends to play as a defensive lineman. As much as it demonstrates his dedication, sometimes, when players get to college, their positions do end up changing. This is not anything against Andrews, but it will be interesting to see if his position stays on defense or move back to offense.
Of course, Liam Andrews has a full year of high school left before officially becoming a Penn State Nittany Lion, but this is big for the university. Beating out other schools is always a great sign for the program. It will be entertaining to watch Andrews, an already talented player, continue to grow until he becomes a big part of this team.
