Minicamp time is beginning in the NFL and will be starting later this week in San Francisco. There are a couple of 2023 49ers offseason dates that are almost here. First, the rookies will finally have their camp; then, the full team will join for mandatory camp just a month later. Here is a look at the 2023 49ers offseason dates to know ahead of time and what to watch for.
2023 49ers Offseason Dates
Rookie Minicamp
May: 12 & 13
While it may just be two days, this is some of the most important 2023 49ers offseason dates. This is the day the rookies can come in and begin adjusting and getting to know the facility. This is when the coaches can see them as members of the San Francisco 49ers and not just draft prospects.
The 49ers drafted nine players and have added 11 undrafted free agents. This is a key moment for the undrafted free agents because this is their chance to show why they should continue to get a chance on the team. San Francisco also invited quarterback Steven Montez from the Seattle Seadragons to join their camp. The 49ers did not sign any rookie quarterbacks, and Montez can be there as the quarterback.
OTA Workouts
May: 22, 23, 25, 30, & 31
June: 2, 5, 6, 8
The next set of the 2023 49ers offseason dates to know are for OTAs. While these dates are not mandatory, the majority of the team does tend to go, unless there are issues with contract negotiations. This is the first time most of San Francisco will be back since the 2022 season. While players have begun to report already, with offseason workouts on April 17th, the majority will be back by this time.
Something to watch for on these dates is how many of the undrafted free agents are in attendance. The team may let go of some and sign other players, as they are currently at 90 players on the roster. This is also a time that the rookies can get to know the returning players and begin building bonds. Recently drafted kicker Jake Moody can begin his battle for the starting position with Zane Gonzalez. Losing Robbie Gould can have a major impact on the team, and this camp battle will be important.
This will also be the first time to test who will be the tight end to pair up with George Kittle. The 49ers drafted two tight ends and in addition to Kittle, already have Charlie Woerner and Ross Dwelley. Woerner is a primary blocker, but Dwelley and the newly drafted Cameron Latu and Brayden Willis can begin to battle it out. While these 2023 49ers camp dates are not mandatory, they are still important after losing many people in free agency and drafting many new ones.
Mandatory Minicamp
June: 13, 14, 15
These 2023 49ers offseason dates stand out because they are mandatory, and there is a lot to watch for. A big focus during this time will be the quarterbacks. Trey Lance, Sam Darnold, and Brandon Allen will be getting all of the reps. While the three of them are pushing each other, there is something on the side people can potentially watch as well. Sam Darnold was signed to challenge Lance, and this will be the first real moment before training camp.
In the most recent update, Brock Purdy can begin throwing the ball very soon. More on the quarterback’s rehab process can be read here. While he will not be practicing with the team, there is a chance that he can be on the side lobbing a couple of balls. Do not take this to mean he is cleared to play, but there could be images of Purdy throwing for the first time.
Hopefully, during the various offseason workouts, the San Francisco players remain healthy. These are the important 2023 49ers offseason dates to know, as fans can finally start discussing how the players are doing again.
