The Green Bay Packers are going through a rebuilding process. After competing for Super Bowls with Aaron Rodgers, the team will now rebuild with Jordan Love under center. How long a rebuild takes is usually dependent on two things. The first is figuring out the quarterback position, which the team is hopeful they already have done. The second is nailing the draft. Consecutive drafts where teams can get a handful of quality players on cheap contracts can shorten the process of a rebuild. The Green Bay Packers had a good draft last year, and this year’s class is also already looking good.
The Green Bay Packers 2022 Class
Many of these players were called upon last year to make an impact. Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Samori Toure, Quay Walker, Zach Tom, and Kingsley Enagbare all played significant snaps for the team last year. The question now is whether those players can make a year two leap. Doubs has looked great in the preseason. His connection with Love looks strong. Enagbare was a wrecking ball in the team’s second preseason game against the Patriots. Zach Tom looks like the right tackle of the future. This group looks primed for some leaps on the field.
Devonte Wyatt, Jonathan Ford, and Rasheed Walker all did not have great rookie seasons but have seen a bigger role this preseason. Wyatt needs to show that he was worthy of a first-round pick and has shown flashes. Ford and Walker, both seventh-round picks, have seen more playing time and look to make an impact in 2023. The Packers know how to find and coach up offensive linemen and Walker looks like another success story. Ford has been playing good snaps on the line in the preseason as well. If nine draft picks from last year can all play significant roles on the team, that is huge. It becomes even better if this year’s class can be great as well.
The Green Bay Packers 2023 Class
Similar to last year, rookies will play vital roles on this team. Luke Musgrave and Jayden Reed already look to be a huge part of the offense. Sean Clifford may have given the team an unexpected quality backup quarterback. Grant DuBose and Dontayvion Wicks have impressed early as well. Tucker Kraft and Lukas Van Ness look to be more long-term projects but aren’t void of talent. There is a good chance that the Green Bay Packers may boast three rookie wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster. This is just the offense. On defense, this class may have found some gems.
Karl Brooks and Colby Wooden have looked great playing together. Yes, it has been against backups, but they are looking like they belong in the NFL. The team is looking at moving Rasul Douglas to safety so they can get Carrington Valentine on the field more. Safety Anthony Johnson Jr. might not be the starting safety but has found his spot in the ever-important special teams unit. There are more unknowns with this class as we have not seen them in a regular season game yet. The first look, however, is positive.
The Number Of Late Round Picks Is Staggering
No one expects perfection out of a draft, especially on day three. As the day wears on, teams often take flyers on players or try to find special teams contributors. In the last two drafts, here are the players drafted on day three that are looking to make an impact.
4th round: Romeo Doubs, Zach Tom, Colby Wooden
5th round: Kingsley Enagbare, Sean Clifford, Dontayvion Wicks
6th round: Karl Brooks, Anders Carlson (the likely starting kicker this season)
7th round: Jonathan Ford, Rasheed Walker, Samori Toure, Carrington Valentine, Anthony Johnson Jr., Grant DuBose
The number of late-round picks that have already shown they can play important roles is staggering. Even if only one or two of the 2023 draft class become quality starters, this is still insane. This type of drafting prowess is how you speed up a rebuilding process. While all of these players will likely have rookie mistakes, in three years, they ideally will be much better and still on rookie contracts. This is the recipe for creating a monster team down the road.
A Lot Of Unknowns
I’m going to rain on my parade for a moment because I recognize that there is definitely some bias here. Being a Green Bay Packers fan means I look at the good of the class instead of the fact that they have proven nothing and have shown out against backups. There is a world where some of the 2022 class does not make a year two jump for the Green Bay Packers. For the 2023 class, some of these players might get played off the field once teams put out their best. Love could be a disaster, and no amount of talent on the offensive side of the ball will help.
However, I look for proof of concept in the preseason. Can you make plays that make it seem like you belong in the NFL? Can you show that you can work within the scheme to find success? This is what makes me so bullish on the current class. It hasn’t just been individual plays. It’s been players having success within the scheme, which makes me more excited.
The Green Bay Packers have the potential to speed up their rebuild because of their drafting prowess. The late-round draft picks on this team who could see significant snaps because of their strong play are amazing. It is a testament to GM Brian Gutekunst and the scouting department. This season might be a down year, but if the young players show improvement, it might not be long before the Green Bay Packers are back on top in the NFC North.
