Trevor Etienne latest Gator to enter transfer portal

One of Florida’s more talented playmakers on offense has entered his name into the transfer portal.

Running back Trevor Etienne has officially entered the transfer portal with two years of college eligibility remaining.

Etienne, the younger brother of Jaguars starting running back Travis Etienne, rushed for 1,472 total yards across two seasons for the Gators and was one of Florida’s most dynamic playmakers on offense that frankly, didn’t touch the football enough during his time in Gainesville.

It should be noted that Etienne choosing to enter the transfer portal does not guarantee that he is leaving Florida, but more likely than not will be playing for another team in 2024.

Etienne’s ability to get skinny through holes opened up by offensive linemen and ability to break tackles is what makes him truly dynamic, but his ability to catch passes out of the backfield ensures that he stays on the field every down and only comes off when he’s tired. The only thing he needs to work on is his pass blocking, which often got him taken off the field in favor of Montrell Johnson Jr. for Florida.

Etienne was one of Florida head coach Billy Napier’s prized recruits from the 2022 recruiting class out of Jennings, Louisiana. He joins fellow 2022 recruiting class mates Chris McClellan, Kamari Wilson, Caleb Douglas, Jalen Farmer, Andrew Savaiinaea, Jordan Herman and Thai Bowman in the transfer portal.

In his freshman season, he  rushed for 719 yards and six touchdowns on 118 carries, whilst also catching nine passes for 66 yards.

In his sophomore season, he rushed for 753 yards and eight touchdowns on 131 carries, whilst also catching 21 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown.

Etienne’s best game as a Gator came in 2023 against Tennessee, when he carried the ball 23 times for 172 yards and a touchdown. That was the game where Etienne proved he could be the starting running back moving forward, and then next week against Charlotte, he carried the ball just eight times for 48 yards.

Etienne had another big game against LSU, his personal homecoming game being from Jennings, Louisiana, where he rushed 18 times for 99 yards and three touchdowns.

With Etienne entering the transfer portal, he instantly becomes the best running back to list their name in the portal and teams such as Georgia and Alabama should firmly be in the mix for him along with anyone else who needs an elite talent to be their starting running back.

Montrell Johnson Jr

For Florida, as of right now, they have Montrell Johnson Jr. and Treyaun Webb in their running back room with a high school recruit committed for the 2024 recruiting class in the fold as well.

Johnson Jr. rushed 817 yards and five touchdowns in 2023 whilst catching 30 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown. Johnson Jr. transferred to Florida from Louisiana, where Napier coached previously before being hired to coach at Florida and transitioned seamlessly when he got to Gainesville.

Treyaun Webb

As a freshman, Webb rushed 26 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Webb, albeit in a limited capacity, showed that he can be a good running back in the SEC. With Etienne departing, Webb is now going to be the running back to complement Johnson.

Webb’s best game came against McNeese where he rushed the ball 14 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

It cannot be understated how big of a loss Etienne entering the transfer portal is for Florida, but they do have players in the running back room fully capable of replacing him. It will not take long for Etienne to find a new home.
