As “GM” of the Seattle Seahawks I selected the 2023 draft picks for the team. This was my first year as the GM and hopefully not the last – move over, Schneider.
The Seattle Seahawks Draft Picks
Round 1 Draft Picks
#5 – Jalen Carter (IDL) – University of Georgia
The decision to use the Seahawk’s first draft pick to choose Jalen Carter was an easy one. Jalen’s poor decision-making in life is no match for Pete Carroll’s calming presence and experience in the league working with every type of player. Carter is also one of the best players in the draft (if not the most) and Seattle has some room for improvement on the defensive line.
#20 – Michael Mayer (TE) – Notre Dame
The line-up at TE was mid at best last year, so as GM, I decided we needed to grab a tight end with our 2nd pick in the 1st round.
Michael Mayer has what Seattle needs. Michael is 6’4′ and 250 pounds and likely has the best blocking techniques out of the TE selections in the draft. At Notre Dame, Mayer was a John Mackey award finalist his junior year, is the school’s all-time leader in all three tight end categories, and had the most single-season receptions and receiving yards for a Fighting Irish TE in 2021.
Round 2 Draft Picks
#37 – Daiyan Henley (LB) – Washington State University
The LB position is a weak spot for Seattle – there are many veteran players, some of who are coming into the season injured, so a young and talented player like Henley would be the perfect addition. He is tenacious, fast, tough, and is used to living in Washington state so he won’t be surprised when he doesn’t see the sun 85% of the year.
#52 – Luke Wypler (C) – Ohio State University
After Austin Blythe’s retirement, the Seahawks need a center. Evan Browns was a good quick-fix signing for the Seahawks, but he is not the long-term answer. As one of the best centers in the draft, he was the logical choice after John Michael Schmitz was selected by the Commanders at pick 47.
Luke Wypler has valuable experience as well. Luke started each year in college and was the #1 player in New Jersey according to 247sports.com and #96 overall.
Round 3 Draft Picks
#83 – Traded for 4th round draft pick and OLB Jonathon Cooper
With the demonstrated need for additional linebackers, having a veteran player with a positive locker-room presence and leadership skills Cooper gained from being team captain twice as a Buck-eye would be a valuable asset.
Jonathon Cooper came into his own last season – we all saw him bring Lamar Jackson down. We will take one QB sacker and a 4th round draft pick, please!
