As a writer and a member of Defiant Takes Football, our company decided to hold a three-round mock draft, and we all made our picks as NFL GMs.
I, of course, picked for the Buffalo Bills. As you may already know, that’s my favorite team. I would like to share with you my three picks and why I chose who I chose.
After my choices are the full three rounds of the 2023 DTF NFL Mock Draft.
Buffalo Bills Round 1 (Pick 27th) – Jack Campbell: MLB / Iowa
It wasn’t easy at first, as I wanted to pick an offensive tackle position. I thought for sure Darnell Wright was going to fall here at 27 for me to take so that the Bills could fill their need at right tackle. Then Campbell could be selected at pick 59 in the second round.
Unfortunately, Wright was gone early, and so was the other lineman I wanted in the first round. That was okay for me, as that made the pick at 27 easier for the Bills to select their next biggest need, which was at the middle linebacker position to replace Tremaine Edmunds.
A trade was almost on my horizon, as Brison Owens (GM of the Denver Broncos) wanted to trade (WR) Cortland Sutton for my 27th pick.
I had to decline his offer, as I decided I had to take Campbell to fill up my MLB need. I almost ended up with Wright, but I was very happy to have selected Campbell at 27.
Round 2 (Pick 59th) – Luke Musgrave: TE / Oregon State
It took me a while, but afterward, I realized I may have gotten a huge steal here at 59 overall. I kept thinking I absolutely had to go fill my right tackle need, but then I realized that Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu’s value at 59 was very low.
Logically it came to me; I needed a number-two tight end opposite of Dawson Knox. When I valued the tight end position on www.thedraftnetwork.com, I saw that Musgrave, out of Oregon State, was on the board.
He was valued at number 23. I thought, wow, that’s a first-round grade still sliding into the second round. How did that happen?
The offensive tackles kept being taken off the board. Matthew Bergeron of Syracuse was taken before me, and so was Tyler Steen of Alabama. I almost took both of them, but then realized Musgrave was a no-brainer at pick 59.
Round 3 (Pick 91st) – Colby Wooden: EDGE / Auburn
Wooden was my second choice. I almost picked Tennessee’s EDGE rusher, Byron Young. He was ranked the 45th prospect according to www.thedraftnetwork.com. Unfortunately, he went just a couple of picks before me, so I went with the second-best option, choosing Wooden.
Wooden is ranked 67th for an EDGE rusher, which the Bills still need to back up Ed Oliver. While he’s ranked lower than Young, he’s much bigger in size, as he’s 6’5″ and 284 lbs. Just like Young, he carved up SEC quarterbacks and running backs in their offensive backfields.
He knows how to step up against football’s best players and will definitely bring it over time as he learns the NFL game.
