The Green Bay Packers OTAs are in their second week. Trying to glean anything from OTAs is difficult as there is a lot of offseason left. However, they can tell us a little bit about how the development of certain players is going. Here are some takeaways from the last couple of weeks.
Green Bay Packers OTAs
This year, a lot of Packers fans are watching OTAs a little more closely. This team has many young pieces like Luke Musgrave, Tucker Kraft, and of course, Jordan Love. Fans are eager to see what Love will be. He is a complete wild card. We have seen too little to make sense of what he is going to be. While we won’t fully know until the season starts, fans are looking for any glimpses that could inform opinions.
Luke Musgrave Looks Awesome
Let’s start with the good from the Green Bay Packers OTAs. The second-round tight end out of Oregon State looks awesome. Of all the videos that have come out from people who are there, Musgrave is featured the most. His athleticism has been on full display, and he has had some great catches over the middle of the field. If Musgrave can create the mismatches with linebackers and open up the middle of the field, the Packers’ offense will have a much easier time moving the ball. Again, it’s early, but this pick looks like a complete home run. He has been the most fun player to watch at Green Bay Packers OTAs.
Mixed Results From Jordan Love In Green Bay Packers OTAs
It has been a mixed bag for Love. On the one hand, he has had some great practices in the Green Bay Packers OTAs. The connection with Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, and the aforementioned Musgrave seems to be blooming. Doubs especially seems to be one of Love’s favorite targets, which bodes well for him having a second-year jump.
However, it hasn’t all been good. He has thrown some egregious interceptions. On one occasion, he threw it late, across his body, over the middle of the field. As a surprise to no one, it was intercepted. At times, Love seems to be trying to do too much. This might be what 2023 will look like—great plays followed by some questionable decisions that lead to turnovers.
Rookie Corner Making The Most Of Opportunity
The great thing about OTAs is that they are often not mandatory. This means that some of the best players are not there, giving opportunities for younger players to shine. Cornerbacks Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, and Eric Stokes are not present so that means younger players are getting their chance. Rookie cornerback Carrington Valentine has looked really good so far. He broke up a couple of passes while covering Doubs, one of them being on a 3rd and goal from the 10. With the top four cornerback spots locked up, Valentine’s play could very well earn him a roster spot.
The Green Bay Packers OTAs have been interesting so far. As always, what happens now has very little bearing on the season. The offseason is always a time when teams hype up their players and post slow-motion videos of throws and catches. If nothing else, the couple weeks of OTAs have shown us that this team is going to be fun to watch regardless of what their record will be.
