The Green Bay Packers enter 2023 with a lot of optimism. There is optimism about Jordan Love and what he can bring to the team. The amount of young players on this roster gives fans a lot of optimism about what they could be. However, teams can always improve, and in recent years, teams have seen success when they engage in trades. Now that free agency has calmed down, here are some potential trade targets for the Green Bay Packers.
Potential Trade Targets For The Green Bay Packers
I will admit that the Packers often do not engage in trades. Their activity in free agency is a new thing. The team has historically preferred to draft and develop, which to their credit, has worked out pretty well. Where a trade could happen this year is if this team overperforms. Let’s say by Week 5, the offense is humming, and the defense is in the top ten. The front office might be inclined to try and improve the roster to make a run in a weak NFC.
S Budda Baker
Let’s start with the obvious. If there is one position the Packers need, it is the safety position. Adrian Amos is gone and
Darnell Savage simply has not panned out. The rest of the players are minimum contract players who are looking to prove themselves. Baker would bring a great veteran presence and raise the floor of the position. The Cardinals are hoarding draft picks like the dragon Smaug in Lord of the Rings. It would probably not be hard to get them to part ways with Baker for the right price.
WR Hunter Renfrow
The Green Bay Packers seem happy with Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure moving forward. You might be surprised to see Toure’s name on there, but the number of times the coaches talk about him unprompted leads me to believe they love the guy. However, all of these players are more outside the numbers receivers. Rookie Jayden Reed is the only true slot guy, so the Packers might be looking for some depth. There have been rumors that Renfrow might be available. His reliable hands and pure route running would be great for a young quarterback like Jordan Love. The Raiders and Packers are familiar with trading receivers, so it definitely isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
QB Trey Lance
I had to put one completely off-the-wall target on the list, but here’s the rationale. If Jordan Love is less than ideal, and they do not like any of the quarterbacks in the draft at their draft position, the Packers could give Lance a look. While the 49ers seem to want to keep Lance, if Brock Purdy is the quarterback of the future, they will have to move on from him at some point. It probably would not take much to get him, and it would be an interesting route to trying to find the next quarterback for the team. I’ll admit this one is unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibility.
The Green Bay Packers are a complete unknown right now. You could tell me anything about this season, and I would probably believe it. As the new era begins, maybe a new era of trades begins for the Packers as well.
