If you had to pick three camp cuts for the Seattle Seahawks, who would they be? It’s hard to choose – the Seahawks have cut so many players already in the off-season. Is there anyone left? Keep reading for the three possible surprise camp cuts for the Hawks.
Camp Cut #1 – Jamal Adams
Jamal Adams was a hail-Mary grab by the Seahawks before the 2020–2021 season. In what was arguably one of the most turbulent seasons in the NFL, the pandemic left many players on the sidelines, either by choice or because they were sick. Literally, everyone was constantly sick. We’ve needed Adams since he came to Seattle, and when he’s around, he is that guy. The trouble is that he frequently isn’t on the gridiron unless it’s in a cart.
In 2020, Jamal was gone from Week 3 to Week 9 after a groin injury. A torn labrum in Week 13 of the 2021 season sidelined him until 2022. Last season, he sustained a torn quad tendon in Week 1 and was out the entire rest of the year. He’s an injury magnet. This is not to criticize Jamal Adams; he is one of my favorite Hawks. He shows up and plays with passion and dedication every single game, and he has helped us out of some rough jams.
That being said, if there’s anything the Seahawks like less than someone who is injury-prone, it’s someone whose age almost starts with the number three. It would not surprise me if Seattle performed their first camp cut on Jamal.
Camp Cut #2 – Joey Hunt
As a dedicated Seahawks fan, I totally remember Joey Hunt… Anyway, Joey has been hiding in locker rooms and on practice squads since 2022. The second time around. Hunt was drafted by Seattle in 2016 and was a wallflower until 2020 when he got canned in July. The Colts picked him up for two seasons before he found his way back to the PNW.
Between the drafting of center Olu Oluwatimi and the free agency signing of veteran Evan Brown, it feels like a certainty of sorts that Joey Hunt will be back pounding the pavement looking for his next seat on a team’s practice squad after his Hawks camp cut.
Camp Cut #3 – Anyone over 30
As mentioned in Jamal Adams’s camp cut analysis, the Seahawks do not appreciate players over 30. It would make sense if they no longer had gas in the tank, but at some points, it feels like age alone is enough to get someone axed.
We have a few stragglers pushing the geriatric third century of their lives, but most are long gone by this “over the hill” birthday. Nick Bellore has somehow stayed on; he is the oldest man on the team, and if not for his incredible interviewing skills (you have to see Between Two Bellores), he would have been a camp cut of yesteryear. 33-year-old Bobby Wagner is back for the 2023 season, but the fact that he left in the first place is an example enough of the Hawks’ allergy to well-seasoned players.
Jarran Reed and Geno Smith are in the good graces of the Hawks management, but they are clearly the solution to the holes the Seahawks have now. Seattle does not view Reed or Smith as players of the future; they are both Mr. Right Nows. For any player nearing 30, take notes from Bellore and maybe take an interview class or two. You won’t be Nick, but you can try, and it might save you from being a camp cut.
