With training camp less than a month away, the Green Bay Packers will have multiple young players fighting for a roster spot. Every season teams have players that they surprisingly cut, which will be nothing new this year. With lots of younger players trying to earn snaps, the Green Bay Packers should have some difficult decisions to make before the season starts. They have some interesting depth at certain positions which will end up costing players a roster spot.
1. Sean Rhyan – Guard
Sean Rhyan is coming off a pretty underwhelming rookie season for the Green Bay Packers. Rhyan was selected in the 3rd round of last year’s draft. The Packers have a history of drafting linemen past the first round and developing them. Many of them have contributed early in their careers, but not exactly for Rhyan. His rookie year consisted of one total snap that came on special teams, along with a six-game suspension to end the season. That isn’t exactly the impression you’d like to make, especially as a third-round draft pick.
Luckily for Rhyan, his draft position may save him another year to prove to the team he can contribute. The Packers may also see potential in him and would like to develop him. Green Bay has lots of depth on the offensive line which will make things interesting for Rhyan. It could come down to him and a couple of other young guys, but cutting a third-round pick after one season would be an interesting move.
2. Sean Clifford – Quarterback
This one would definitely be one of the biggest surprises of them all. The Green Bay Packers used their fifth-round selection this past draft on QB Sean Clifford. Some people may have thought it was a “reach” but Green Bay stuck to their board. Clifford is currently locked in a battle for the backup position with Danny Etling. Etling has yet to play a snap in the regular season in his career which should create a competitive battle for the spot behind Jordan Love. This would be a surprising cut considering all rookies have made the roster the past couple of seasons in Green Bay.
Green Bay could also opt to add a veteran quarterback to the mix which would also definitely shake things up a bit. The Packers did spend a draft pick on Clifford though which should help his case but weirder things have happened. Etling could absolutely show out and a veteran could be added which would leave Clifford as the odd man out. It seems though that he would have to have a terrible camp to get cut. It may be unlikely Clifford gets cut, but it’s not something that would be considered impossible.
3. Tarvarius Moore – Safety
Tarvarius Moore was a recent acquisition for the Green Bay Packers this offseason. He started a handful of games for the 49ers in 2020 and has been an occasional starter throughout his career. Green Bay was lacking safety depth coming into the offseason, and they addressed it by signing Moore along with Johnathan Owens. Cutting a player who you just signed and has a chance to make an impact isn’t exactly ideal. Even though he was a recent signing and safety was a need, the Green Bay Packers may have a safety battle during training camp. Owens started every game for Houston last season and Rudy Ford is coming off of a promising season for Green Bay.
They also have Darnell Savage who’s in for a make-or-break season and drafted Anthony Johnson Jr. Dallin Leavitt is also a key special teams player which could help his case. Moore is going to have to show up this training camp to prove he wasn’t signed for no reason. He has a ceiling on this team as a starter but getting cut isn’t out of the equation. The Green Bay Packers have a real position battle on their hands in the secondary and it should be fun to see who emerges to the top.
