The Green Bay Packers have a need for a backup quarterback. While this is by no means the most important position on the roster, it is one that needs to be filled. Injuries happen in this league and while everyone hopes that Jordan Love will stay healthy for years to come, good teams have a decent plan B.
Backup Quarterback For The Green Bay Packers
We have seen it time and time again with teams, most recently the San Francisco 49ers. A good backup quarterback can help salvage a season. Even this late in free agency, there are still some solid options for the backup position. One thing to remember is that while fans may hate a certain player as a number one option, he may be a good option in the backup role. Here are three options for the Green Bay Packers.
Carson Wentz
I do not love Wentz as a starter. His last two stops with the Colts and Commanders have ended in disaster. However, I actually love him in the backup role. If he needed to come in for a series or two or even a game, there would be confidence that the team would be getting at least decent quarterback play.
The other element in favor of Wentz is he seems like a good teammate. Love will need all the support he can get, and having Wentz on the sidelines helping him diagnose plays would be a plus. His experience as a starter would be beneficial to a first-year starter. The team could also get him for cheap, as it does not seem like he will have many suitors.
Teddy Bridgewater
It was a limited sample size for the Miami Dolphins last season but Bridgewater actually had a good season. He had career highs in yards per attempt (8.6) and touchdown percentage (5.1%) on just 79 pass attempts for Miami. Obviously, that is a small sample size but Bridgewater looked good. When he was with the Saints, he played well in the backup role. Similar to Wentz, he would bring a veteran presence to the quarterback room, which would help Love transition to the starting role.
Matt Ryan
It seems that Matt Ryan’s arm simply gave out last season. He lost his starting job as the Colts’ quarterback due to this and the fact that they were looking to tank for a higher pick. However, he could be a great backup quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. Having a player that has been in big games before would be helpful for Love, but I also think he fits in the offense if he needed to spot start.
The Packers have many playmakers that can turn a short pass into a big gain. Aaron Jones and Christian Watson can easily take a swing pass or a screen pass and take it to the house. Ryan isn’t going to push the ball downfield but he would be able to get the ball in the hands of playmakers effectively.
Draft A Rookie?
The Packers should try to draft a rookie quarterback. Having this player serve as the backup would be risky going into the season but it would also save some money in the salary cap. Here are some options that the Packers could get in the later rounds.
Clayton Tune – Houston: An experienced prospect with a big arm. Has a similar play style to Jordan Love, so he would be able to pick up the offense alongside him.
Max Duggan – TCU: He led a team to a national championship, so there might be something there. He has a lot to work on but if Tom Clements and the coaching staff can get him under their wings, he might turn into a decent player.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson – UCLA: This is an “out-there” selection. His arm is not great but his athleticism makes him a dual-threat quarterback. If the Packers are looking to have another option on the roster and explore something different, Thompson-Robinson would be a great pick late.
It will be interesting to see what direction the Packers go. There are plenty of veterans out there but they could also decide to go all in on a young core.
