According to multiple sources close to the Oklahoma State Board of Regents, head coach Mike Gundy has been given an ultimatum.

An emergency board meeting was held at 7:30 a.m. Friday, with Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg and university president Kayse Shrum called into attendance. The meeting lasted between 30 and 60 minutes before being adjourned, reportedly due to disagreements over the approach to Gundy’s future.

One source said the board “had the votes for Gundy and the university to part ways.” However, complications surrounding Gundy’s $25.3 million buyout and potential name, image and likeness (NIL) related conflicts delayed the decision.

Shrum and Weiberg reportedly left the meeting “determined” and “upset” after a resolution was not reached.

The ultimatum involves significant amendments to Gundy’s five-year rollover contract, including slashing his $7.75 million annual salary. Details remain unclear as the situation continues to develop. Sources indicate, however, that while an announcement is not expected today, a deadline of 5 p.m. has been set for Gundy’s response, with a final decision by the board expected shortly thereafter.

Regardless of the outcome, changes to Oklahoma State’s head coaching position appear immediate, whether through a revised contract or a completely new direction.

The latest reports suggest Gundy and the university are “in a standoff,” with a potential firing “with cause” if he does not agree to the proposed contract according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.. The standoff reportedly stems from Gundy’s resistance to making changes at the coordinator positions and comments earlier in the season dismissing fan criticism.

According to Robert Allen, Oklahoma State insider and reporter, there is “angst in the Gundy camp”

As it currently stands, sources say, coach Gundy is either taking the contract or separating ways after a historic tenure at Oklahoma State.

Gundy has served as Oklahoma State’s head coach for 20-years, posting a 169-88 record alongside eight 10-win seasons.
