Not only was Saturday night the White Out, but it was also a Penn State blowout win. The Nittany Lions defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes 31-0, completely controlling the game. With this Penn State blowout, the Nittany Lions are 4-0, while the Hawkeyes now fall to a 3-1 record. Here is a look at the Penn State blowout and what’s next for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State Controls the Game

Facing a ranked opponent in the White Out is always cause for excitement. Having that ranked opponent also play in the Big Ten makes it even more of a competition. The matchup was also played in the rain, which got worse with the addition of the win as the game progressed. Having said that, this should have been a close game, but the Nittany Lions never let that happen.

The Penn State offense ran 97 plays in the game. This compares to just 33 Hawkeyes plays for just 76 total yards. Yes, Penn State ran more plays than Iowa had in total yards. Iowa also had just four first downs throughout the entire game. The time-of-possession battle ended with the Halwkeys having it just over 14 minutes, while Penn State had the ball for just over 45 minutes. This was more than just a Penn State blowout; this was a complete domination, one the Nittany Lions needed after some struggles in week three.

Drew Allar Plays Smart

Quarterback Drew Allar played very well in his first Penn State White Out start. In a rainy and windy game, there were expectations that the team would run the ball more, but the passing game was just fine. By the end of the game, Allar had 25 completions out of 37 attempts for 166 yards, according to ESPN. Allar also had a career-high of four touchdown passes. Those who caught the touchdowns were wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith and tight ends Khalil Dinkins and Tyler Warren. Warren had two receiving touchdowns in the night.

The Nittany Lions also went for it on fourth down four times. They got it each time, three times with the QB sneak. One of the fourth-down plays was a touchdown reception. The aggressiveness from the offense truly set the tone for the game. While Allar’s four touchdowns will be what is talked about, the team did end up with 215 rushing yards as well. Once again, quarterback Beau Pribula entered the game and rushed for 55 yards while running down the clock.

Defense Stands Strong

Considering this win was a Penn State blowout, the defense definitely had themselves a day. They were barely on the field with that many three-and-outs or turnovers. The defense ended up with just 24 total tackles, five tackles for loss, and three sacks, according to ESPN. This does not sound like much, but that is why basic stats are not everything. The team also had four fumble recoveries, one coming from a strip sack by Chop Robinson.

This showing was the Penn State defense that fans were waiting for. Of course, it being the White Out also helps. The Iowa offense did have to take time-outs and delay games due to the crowd noise. It is naturally difficult to play at Beaver Stadium, but adding the energy of the White Out will affect the game more. Even with the cold rain, the majority of the fans stayed until the end, a big contributor to this being a Penn State blowout win.
