It has now been a couple of weeks ever since the 2023 USFL Season came to a close. The Birmingham Stallions won the league for the second year in a row. The quarterback on the Stallions, Alex McGough, looks to be moving on from the USFL as he has plans to sign with an NFL team. The team he is set to sign with is the Greenbay Packers, and he is one of the few players to be signing an NFL contract. Here is a look back on Alex McGouh’s 2023 season and what it means that the quarterback signed with the Packers.
Alex McGough’s 2023 season
Alex McGough had a great season with the Stallions. He started as the second quarterback on the depth chart, but when he had to become the starter in week two, he made his name known across the league. The Stallions ended their season with an 8-2 record, and McGough was named the league MVP. McGough also led the league in passing touchdowns in 2022, which is a big reason why the Stallions played so well.
The Birmingham Stallions were a dominant team on offense. Aside from leading the league in passing touchdowns, McGough ended up completing 180 passes out of 267 attempts in the regular season, according to the USFL. In ten games, the quarterback totaled 2,104 passing yards, averaging 210.4 yards per game. He passed for 20 touchdowns compared to five interceptions. He also had 403 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
Based on how McGough played not just during the regular season but throughout playoffs, it is no surprise that he would have the opportunity to sign with an NFL team. He is one of those players who will always put their body on the line if it means getting as many yards as possible. McGough is a leader and will fit right in with the Greenbay Packers.
Alex McGough’s Greenbay Packers Potential
As everyone who watches the NFL knows, the Greenbay Packers will be starting a new quarterback this year. Now that Aaron Rodgers is with the New York Jets, Jordan Love is expected to take over as the starting quarterback in 2023. Aside from Love, in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Packers selected Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford. McGough fits in with these two well and can very well make the 53-man roster.
There is not a lot known about how Love will do in the NFL. He has been a part of ten games but has only ever started in one game out of his two years in Greenbay. Yes, we can look at his stats and see he has passed for 606 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, according to Pro Football Reference. In reality, the real judgment needs to wait for the regular season.
As this relates to Alex McGough, there is a good chance the USFL quarterback could make a push for second on the depth chart. Clifford is a rookie, which means he will have a lot to prove throughout training camp. If Love gets hurt in the season, the Packers will need to be sure that they have a player ready to go in when needed. Both Clifford and McGough can do that, and both of them are competitors. This does give McGough a big chance to make the 53-man roster, which is well-deserved for such a tough player.
Signing with a team with so much unknown at the quarterback position was a smart move by McGough. Of course, it cannot be said for sure if he will ever see the field, but this team does give him the opportunity other teams would not. McGough is a competitor, and the entire training camp will be full of competition for where each quarterback lands on the depth chart. Alex McGough was a beast in the 2023 USFL season and is well deserving of this opportunity.
